City-Bahn offers GDL talks on 35-hour week

  • Management sent new offer to the union today
  • City-Bahn Managing Director Straube: "I am acting in the interests of the passengers".
  • Goal: Return to reliable driving operations as quickly as possible

Chemnitz - The management of City-Bahn Chemnitz today offered the German Train Drivers' Union (GDL) to enter into talks on the introduction of a 35-hour week with full pay compensation. The GDL is demanding this in the collective bargaining negotiations and has yet to respond.

City-Bahn Managing Director Friedbert Straube: "I made the offer because further strikes are unreasonable for both passengers and staff. My alternative offer of 6 June could have led to a better result for the city railway workers. Unfortunately, the GDL rejected it."

The judgement of the Saxon State Labour Court plays a role in the management's decision to enter into talks on the introduction of a reduction in working hours.

The court had ruled that strikes that lead to an obstruction of school transport must be announced four days in advance. However, as a result of the balancing exercise, the court categorised the fundamental right to strike - apart from minor restrictions - higher than the pupils' fundamental right to education and a safe journey to school.

The aim of the City-Bahn is to prevent further strikes and to resume stable and reliable transport operations as quickly as possible.
