For the pilot line of the Chemnitz model, vehicles suitable for both the tram and railway networks are required. After electrification of the section Altchemnitz - Stollberg with 750 V DC, the use of a Regio-Variobahn (with modifications compared to series CVAG) was the most economical variant of operation.
The main differences to the conventional equipment for the tram network are a new wheel profile, a prerequisite for smooth running and high derailment safety of the trains on both tracks, a train control system (Indusi I60R) prescribed due to the higher speed and the single-track route, train radio and a signal horn. All the comfort features already familiar from inner-city use, such as level boarding through four wide doors on both sides, good visibility to the outside through large windows, optical and acoustic passenger information, air-conditioned interior and a ticket vending machine, are of course also available in the Regio vehicles.
The City-Bahn Chemnitz has a total of six railcars of this type (411-416), which are maintained at CVAG's Adelsberg tram depot.
The Variobahn 6NGT-LDZ vehicles are in service on the C11 Chemnitz - Stollberg line.
