Strike: Despite attractive offer from the company - trade union will strike City-Bahn

  • Train drivers' union breaks off collective bargaining with City-Bahn after just one hour
  • City-Bahn Managing Director: "Was surprised about the cancellation"
  • Unfortunately, the strike date for Wednesday evening was announced at short notice

Chemnitz - The wage negotiations between City-Bahn Chemnitz and the German Train Drivers' Union (GDL) were broken off by the GDL. City-Bahn had put an attractive offer on the table, but was unable to agree to the demand for a 35-hour working week.

City-Bahn Managing Director Friedbert Straube: "Our offer was in line with the outcome of many other collective wage agreements - and that's what the city railway workers should get."

The crux of the negotiations: The GDL is demanding a reduction in working hours to a 35-hour working week and at the same time over 25 % more pay. Friedbert Straube: "The industry can't afford that in terms of personnel. And even if it did: If we were to start doing this, we would attract skilled workers from other sectors that are themselves suffering from a shortage of skilled labour: Paramedics, carers for the elderly and nurses, for example. Fuelling this crisis cannot be the purpose of collective bargaining or the task of municipal companies. I have made that very clear."

The GDL announced on Tuesday evening that it would also be striking on the City-Bahn from 10pm on 15 November to 6pm on 16 November.

Passengers please note that services may have to be restricted before 10 pm and will only be resumed gradually after the end of the strike. Further transport information will follow on Wednesday.
